Google AdSense In A Nutshell

Last few days people are writing a lot about Google AdSense. Most of them complaining about their service, but also, some of them praising it. Anyhow, I’ve decided to summarize all those conclusions into one single article so you wouldn’t get lost in the sea of very similar posts.

About Google AdSense

If you don’t know already, AdSense is Google’s service which allows you to make money by displaying their ads on your website (AdSense for content) or to provide Google’s search to your site’s visitors (AdSense for search). The program is free, and combines pay-per-click and pay-per-impression advertising – meaning you get paid for valid clicks on the ads on your site or search results pages as well as impressions on your content pages. Price for each click or impression varies, depending on how Google calculates it at that moment. Because the ads are related to what your users are looking for on your site, you’ll finally have a way to both monetize and enhance your content pages.

How to join

Registration procedure is quite simple and straight forward. All you need to have is email address and a website URL. If you don’t have your own hosted website and domain name, you can use a free one at www.blogger.com or pages.google.com. After you fill their signup form, you’ll need to wait couple of days until your account gets approved. After that, you are ready to roll.

How to integrate it with your website

When it comes to integration with your website content, there are different opinions around the community. Some people suggest that AdSense should be blended with the content of your site and some people suggest the oposite – to make them stand out. But, all of them agree on one – they came up with their conclusions only after certain time of experimenting and determining which way brings them more money. So, that’s what I would suggest to all of you – experiment and find out which method brings you more money and then stick to that method.

Pros and cons

PROS – Almost anybody can join. They have couple of different payment methods which are suitable for almost every part of the world. You don’t need to have your own hosted website or domain name to use it. Your website’s traffic size doesn’t matter. They have probably the largest number of advertisers in the world. Customizable ad types usable with any type of site design. You can use more then one website with one AdSense account.

CONS – You don’t have a clue how much you could get paid for specific ad. You shouldn’t use ads from other networks together with theirs. Your account could be ceased without any notice or without any clear explanation (thus, most of these cases happened because people were not respecting their TOS). You could make more money with some other advertising networks or affiliate programs.

Conclusion If you are thinking about either to use Google AdSense on your website or not, I suggest you to give it a try. It cost you nothing, especially if you are just starting up. Eventually, while your website grows, you’ll be able to test some other sources of income and decide if you would stick with AdSense in the future or with somebody else. But important thing to have in mind is while using it, don’t abuse it. Google, being one of the most powerful companies out there, do have the resources to make your life hard or better said, the life of your Internet business. You can read about all of those who were playing around with AdSense and finally, all of them were punished in few different ways. Was it by decreasing their PageRank, ceasing them from Google’s search listings or removing their accounts and make them lost everything they earn by that moment, it sure wasn’t worth the game. Like in any other business, you need to do it respectably.
